DUBAI, U.A.E. - Claiming that the northeast African country has the potential to become one of its biggest markets, the Middle East ride-hailing giant, Careem launched its service in Sudan.
The company, which is Uber's biggest rival in the Middle East, announced on Sunday that it had expanded its services into Sudan.
Careem, which became one of the few international companies to enter Sudan since the U.S. economic sanctions against the country were lifted in 2017, expressed hope in the African country's potential to turn into its biggest market.
In its official statement, Careem announced that its services were now available in Sudan's capital Khartoum.
The company further stated that it has hired 10 Sudanese employees and signed up hundreds of drivers to its app to launch operations.
In an interview with Reuters Ibrahim Manna, Careem's Managing Director for Emerging Markets said, "My goal and aim is to cover as many (cities) as possible in the next one or two years."
Careem's confidence in the market comes even as Sudan continues to grapple with an economic crisis.
The company has stated that it is expecting to have about 30 employees in Sudan.
Further, Careem is planning to establish its presence in at least one other city in the1 northeast African country by the end of the year.
However, it will be faced with some competition in the country as several local ride-hailing apps, such as Tirhal operate in the country.
