YAOUNDE, Jan. 9 (Xinhua) -- Cape Verde's Blue Sharks who are appearing at their third finals in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) began their AFCON campaign on Sunday with a victory over Ethiopia.
Striker Julio Tavares headed home the winner as Cape Verde beat Ethiopia 1-0 on the opening day of AFCON.
Cape Verde had just six substitutes, with their coach and nine players isolating after testing positive of COVID-19, and two players injured.
"I would like to dedicate this victory to all the players and the technical staff who participated in our qualification for the AFCON and who could not come. I also dedicate it to all the Cape Verdeans who support us. We are happy for our collective performance and also the distinction of Rocha as Man of The Match. Three important points for us for the race to the qualification," Humberto Bettencourt, assistant coach of Cape Verde said in a post-match press conference.
"We lacked experience against a good Cape Verdean team. A defeat is true, but we will learn lessons for our next matches," Ethiopia coach Wubetu Abate told a press conference.
Earlier, Cameroon defeated Burkina Faso 2-1 in Sunday's opening match at the newly-built Olembe Stadium in Yaounde.
The football jamboree will end on February 6.
