WASHINGTON, D.C.: A nationwide recall has been issued across the United States for several brands of canned tuna sold at major retailers, including Trader Joe's, Costco, and H-E-B, due to potential botulism risk, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
Tri-Union Seafoods, based in El Segundo, California, announced the recall last week, affecting specific lots of tuna sold under the Genova, Van Camp's, H-E-B, and Trader Joe's brand names. The company identified a defect in the "easy open" can lids, which may cause the product to leak or become contaminated with bacteria that produce botulinum toxin—a rare but dangerous toxin that can lead to paralysis or death.
The recalled products have best-by dates in 2027 and 2028 and were also sold at Harris Teeter, Publix, Kroger, Safeway, Walmart, and various independent grocery stores across multiple states.
Although no illnesses have been reported so far, consumers are urged not to eat the recalled tuna, even if it appears normal and does not have an unusual smell. The company advises customers to return the recalled products for a full refund, dispose of them, or contact Tri-Union Seafoods for further instructions.
Botulism is a serious but rare illness caused by a toxin that attacks the nervous system. Symptoms include difficulty breathing, muscle paralysis, and even death in severe cases.
For more details, consumers can check the FDA recall notice, which includes a list of affected retail codes and additional safety information.
