NEW YORK, New York - U.S. stock indices were divided Thursday, with the Standard and Poor's 500 and Nasdaq Composite holding ateady, while the Down Jones was in retreat.

"Today's price action definitely has felt idiosyncratic, and that's a lot of times what we see during earnings season where ... investors rather focus on individual company fundamentals," Zachary Hill, head of portfolio management at Horizon Investments, told CNBC Thursday.

Referring to the recent imposed, and paused trade tariffs, Hill said: "That continues to be something that, while it's not like impacting the price action at the moment, we do think is something that will continue to be in investors' calculus for some time."

The Standard and Poor's 500 inched higher, closing at 6,083.57 after advancing by 22.09 points an increase of 0.36 percent. Trading volumes reached 3.043 billion shares, underscoring steady investor interest amid an array of sector performances.

In contrast, the Dow Jones Industrial Average faced a downturn. The blue-chip index fell by 125.65 points to settle at 44,747.63, marking a decline of 0.28 percent. Despite this drop, the market's overall sentiment remained mixed as trading volume for the Dow was recorded at 529.673 million shares.

Tech-heavy sentiment buoyed the NASDAQ Composite, which closed at 19,791.99, rising by 99.66 points up 0.51 percent. The robust performance on the NASDAQ was supported by significant trading activity, with volume hitting 6.084 billion shares.

In the United Kingdom, the FTSE 100 advanced by 103.99 points, finishing at 8,727.28 a gain of 1.21 percent.

Across the English Channel, France's CAC 40 added 115.94 points to close at 8,007.62, up 1.47 percent, mirroring Germany's DAX P, which surged 316.49 points to finish at 21,902.42 (up 1.47 percent).

The EURO STOXX 50 I also posted a robust increase of 85.51 points, climbing 1.62 percent to 5,356.63.

European momentum was further reflected in the Euronext 100 Index, which ended at 1,554.89 after gaining 15.34 points (up 1.00 percent), while Belgium's BEL 20 advanced 50.62 points to 4,337.47, up 1.18 percent.

Mixed Developments in Asia and Oceania
Asian markets showed a generally positive trend. Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index rose by 294.53 points to 20,891.62 (up 1.43 percent), and Japan's Nikkei 225 added 235.05 points, finishing at 39,066.53 (up 0.61 percent).

South Korea's KOSPI Composite Index advanced by 27.48 points to 2,536.75, up 1.10 percent, while China's SSE Composite Index gained 41.17 points to settle at 3,270.66 (up 1.27 percent).

Singapore's STI Index, however, recorded a modest increase of 15.05 points to 3,830.42, up 0.39 percent.

In the Australasian region, Australia's markets performed steadily. The S&P/ASX 200 climbed 103.80 points to close at 8,520.70 (up 1.23 percent), and the All Ordinaries added 101.70 points, ending at 8,785.10 (up 1.17 percent).

Developments Across Emerging Markets
In India, the S&P BSE Sensex experienced a slight downturn, falling by 213.12 points to 78,058.16 (down 0.27 percent).

Over in Malaysia, the FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI edged higher by 10.66 points to finish at 1,585.17 (up 0.68 percent).

Taiwan's TWSE Capitalization Weighted Stock Index also posted gains, rising by 155.02 points to 23,316.60 (up 0.67 percent).

Middle East Markets Mixed

Meanwhile, Israel's TA-125 saw a slight decline of 4.84 points to close at 2,573.46 (down 0.19 percent).

Further afield, Egypt's EGX 30 Price Return Index gained 276.20 points to settle at 30,011.80 (up 0.93 percent) on a volume of 83.498 million shares.

African Equities Also Rise

South Africa's Top 40 USD Net TRI Index also rose by 54.13 points to finish at 4,608.58 (up 1.19 percent).
