(250402) -- CHENGDU, April 2, 2025 (Xinhua) -- Zhang Wanxin (R) teaches a child of the Cicida Orchestra at Xingge Live House in Chengdu, southwest China's Sichuan Province, March 31, 2025.
The Cicida Orchestra in Chengdu is composed of children with autism and other developmental conditions.
Autism is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by varying degrees of impairment in communication skills and social interactions. Children with autism are sometimes called "children of the stars" in China as they are often perceived as lonely and can have unconventional emotional reactions, language abilities or social skills.
Guided by Zhang Wanxin, a dedicated "post-95" music mentor, children in the orchestra have learned to play instruments and coordinate with each other in performance through unwavering commitment and persistent efforts. Music helps unlock children's mind and potential, and their cognitive abilities and behaviors have shown improvement with the therapy of music.
For Zhang, every child in the orchestra deserves "highlight moments" in life. Children bask in spotlight and applause when they perform on stage, which is a profound affirmation for both these young performers and their parents. The orchestra now rehearses twice a week at Xingge Live House and performs almost every weekend near Tianfu Square in downtown Chengdu.
In Zhang's mind, the relationship with her students is a bond of mutual growth. While helping children find their light, she also discovered her own value and direction. (Xinhua/Shen Bohan)
