The Russian health watchdog has announced plans to send specialists, logistical support, and tests to Uganda
Specialists from Moscow will conduct an epidemiological investigation in Uganda after it requested assistance amid an Ebola outbreak, Russia's public health watchdog has announced.
Ebola is a severe viral disease that can cause hemorrhagic fever, organ failure, and death. The latest outbreak is affecting Uganda and neighboring Democratic Republic of the Congo (DR Congo), prompting the World Health Organization (WHO) to declare a public health emergency of international concern.
"Russia's public health watchdog will also provide logistical support to Uganda's Health Ministry and supply Ebola diagnostic tests developed by its affiliated research institutions and used in Russia," Rospotrebnadzor, which is responsible for monitoring epidemics, said on Monday.
The organization highlighted that joint efforts in recent years have significantly strengthened Uganda's scientific, laboratory, and personnel capabilities. In 2024, Russia transferred a mobile anti-epidemic laboratory to Ugandan partners, enabling rapid diagnostics of dangerous infectious diseases. The facility was already used in 2025 to help contain a previous Ebola outbreak.
Russian medics have also trained more than 80 Ugandan specialists in infectious disease monitoring, disinfection practices, laboratory diagnostics and biological safety.

Health authorities say the current outbreak was caused by the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola, for which there are no approved drugs or vaccines. As of May 16, the WHO reported 246 suspected Ebola cases and 80 suspected deaths in the DR Congo, while Uganda confirmed two imported cases, including one death.
The WHO said the outbreak poses a serious international public health threat requiring cross-border coordination, warning that the virus has been detected in areas with high population mobility, increasing the risk of further spread.
