Ketel Marte and Corbin Carroll led a 13-hit attack for the Arizona Diamondbacks on Sunday, and Ryne Nelson silenced the Colorado Rockies' bats in a 9-1 victory in Phoenix that gave the hosts their third win in the four-game series.
Marte, who went 3-for-4 with three RBIs and three runs, and Carroll, who went 4-for-4 with two RBIs, put the Diamondbacks up in their first at-bats. Marte hit the first of his two doubles and came home on the first of two triples by Carroll, who made it 2-0 when he scored on Geraldo Perdomo's sacrifice fly off Rockies starter Jose Quintana (2-3).
That was plenty for Nelson (2-3), who needed 103 pitches to go a career-high eight innings. The right-hander won for the first time since April 8, but he pitched into the seventh inning for his fourth straight start.
Nelson's only run allowed came on Chad Stevens' sacrifice fly in the eighth. He scattered six hits and three walks while striking out three as the Diamondbacks won for the seventh time in their last eight games.
The Diamondbacks put it away with a four-run second. Ryan Waldschmidt, who went 2-for-4 and drove in a run, started the frame with a base hit. He scored an out later on Aramis Garcia's single. Tommy Troy doubled in his first career at-bat, and both scored on Marte's ground-rule double.
Troy went 2-for-4 with two doubles and two runs in his major league debut.
That was all for Quintana. The left-hander, 37, left the mound with a trainer in what the Rockies later reported was left elbow discomfort. The journeyman failed to pitch out of the second inning for just the fifth time in his 15-year career. The last time that happened was on Aug. 19, 2021 in Detroit, when he pitched for the Los Angeles Angels.
Marte extended his hitting streak to eight games and has back-to-back three-hit games. He's 17-for-32 since May 16 to raise his average from .209 to .262.
Carroll, who extended his hitting streak to 12 games, recorded his fifth game with at least two triples.
Colorado lost for the fifth time in its last six.
